Our Legislative Priorities

Welcome to the Lobby Items section of the Curtis Oscar Noble Legislative Conference. Here you’ll find detailed information on the legislative amendments we are advocating for on behalf of Alberta’s Fire Fighters and Paramedics. These items reflect our ongoing commitment to improving safety, health benefits, and working conditions for our members.

Alongside each item, you’ll find a linked Briefing Document.  A resource you can present directly to your MLA. These documents provide clear background on the issue, why it matters, and the legislative action we’re asking government to take.

We invite you to explore each item and the supporting documents below to gain a deeper understanding of our initiatives and how your engagement helps strengthen our collective advocacy.

LAPP Sponsor Board

Alberta Fire Fighters have a unique set of pension needs, reflecting their long, physically demanding careers and the high level of risk involved in their work. Though Fire Fighters played a key role in shaping the LAPP Joint Governance Board, the current board structure lacks direct representation for our members. We are calling for legislative action to include the Alberta Fire Fighters and Paramedics Association on the LAPP Sponsor Board to ensure Fire Fighters' voices are represented in pension governance, as is standard in other provinces.

WCB Briefing Document

WCB Maximum Compensable Earnings

Alberta’s Fire Fighters typically work 30 or more years as frontline first responders in one of the most physically demanding and hazardous professions. Daily exposures to carcinogens, violence, hazardous materials, and traumatic events make the likelihood of a time-loss injury high, and when members are off work, WCB remuneration often results in reduced income. With over 85% of our members serving as primary income earners, 87% working full-time, and 98% committing to 30+ year careers with the same employer, families should not be forced to sacrifice their quality of life simply because a fire fighter or paramedic is recovering from an occupational injury or illness.

We are calling for a legislative exemption to ensure members receive their full wage during recovery, reflecting the realities of our profession and protecting the financial security of those who serve Alberta every day.

Carrying These Priorities Forward

The Lobby Items outlined above represent the core legislative priorities of the Alberta Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics Association for this year. Each briefing document has been prepared to support your conversations with MLAs, ensuring our message is clear, consistent, and impossible to ignore.

Together, by carrying these priorities forward, we can safeguard the financial security and long-term wellbeing of Alberta’s Fire Fighters and Paramedics.
